Management and Treatment of Borderline Personality Disorder : An Overview

Abstract

Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) is a complex mental health condition characterized by emotional instability, impulsive behavior, and difficulties in interpersonal relationships. Its development is influenced by a combination of biological, social, and psychological factors, creating significant challenges in understanding and managing the disorder. Neurological studies have identified abnormalities in brain regions, particularly the frontal lobe, which play a central role in emotional regulation and decision-making. Dysregulated neural pathways, particularly those involving serotonin and dopamine systems, are key contributors to the physiological underpinnings of BPD. Moreover, substance abuse, frequently co-occurring with BPD, exacerbates these disruptions. Social factors also play a significant role in the development of BPD, particularly in the context of early family dynamics and peer relationships. Traumatic experiences, such as childhood abuse or neglect, have been strongly linked to the emergence of dysfunctional attachment patterns that persist into adulthood. In line with previous research, psychological factors such as chronic depression and anxiety often coexist with BPD, further intensifying the emotional and cognitive challenges faced by individuals with the disorder. Given the complexity of BPD, an integrated biopsychosocial approach to treatment is essential. Current therapeutic approaches, including Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), which targets emotional regulation and interpersonal effectiveness, have shown promising results. However, continued research is necessary to refine these interventions and develop more tailored treatments. For this overview, the current research has aimed to highlight the importance of an eclectic treatment approach that addresses the multifaceted nature of BPD, paving the way for future developments in the field.
